From 1967 to 1971, Cleaver served as the Black Panther Party's communications secretary and became the first woman appointed to its Central Committee, the Party’s highest decision-making body. In the early 1980s, Cleaver reassessed the tools of struggle. She completed her undergraduate degree at Yale University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1984 with a degree in history. She then earned her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1989, writing a senior thesis that examined the legal dimensions of racial subordination and resistance.
